J201 Section 321 - Spring 2011

Welcome to the wiki for section 321 of J201 in Spring 2011. This is where we will post written essays, do peer reviews, archive oral presentation recordings and much more. As for research reports, please visit the class blog. The reading lists and general information can be found on the class webpage. I strongly recommend that you bookmark these pages. You may ask why we keep all these online spaces separate, but it is a good opportunity to experience many types of productive online interaction besides Facebook (which we do not use in this class).

How to Post Here

This site is using the PBWorks Wiki, which is not quite markup-based as Wikipedia's MediaWiki engine. These are the general rules to post your essays and add peer reviews.

How to post your essay drafts

1. Click the 'EDIT' tab at the top of the front page.

2. Type 'YourLastName1' into the appropriate box in the table.
3. Highlight 'YourLastName1' and click 'Add Link' in the formatting toolbar.
4. A box will pop up.  Press enter/return.
5. Click 'Save' at the bottom of the page.
6. This will redirect you to front page, in 'VIEW' mode.  Click the link you just made.
7. This will take you to a page to confirm the creation of a new page.  Press enter/return or click 'Create page'.
8. This will take you to the new page you just made.  Copy your essay from the document on which you wrote it and paste it into the text box.
9. Click 'Save' at the bottom of the page.

If you don't manage to insert a page link in the big table, the problem is that although I will be able to read yours, your peer reviewers probably will have a harder time finding it.  In case you uploaded it as a 'new page' but don't have a link, do the following:

1) Enter your lastname1 in that cell
2) click the right button, select 'edit'
3) in the pop-up window click 'existing page, file or folder'
4) search the page you made and select it
5) click 'Edit link'.

How to add peer reviews

If your peer comment is a clear and concise one less than 2000 letters long, just use the comment window. But if you unfortunately have a lot more to say, here's what you can do.

1. Go to the essay page you will do the peer review on.

2. Click the 'EDIT' tab.

3. Go to the bottom and insert a horizontal rule.

4. Write your suggestions after the rule. Do not directly rewrite your peer's essay.

5. Write your name. I fully respect the right to remain anonymous online, but won't be able to add it to your grade if you forget this.

6. Click 'Save' at the bottom of the page.
